Ceramic coating vs wax
Is a coating worth it over a good wax?

A wax sits on top of the paint and washes away in a few months. A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and lasts years. Wax costs less and has to be redone; a coating is applied once, over corrected paint, and changes how often the vehicle needs washing.
Side by side
How long it lasts
Wax or sealant
Weeks to a few months, then it is gone and the paint is bare again.
Ceramic coating
Years. It is a semi-permanent bond with the factory paint, not a layer resting on it.
How it goes on
Wax or sealant
Wiped on over clean paint. Quick, and it can be redone at home.
Ceramic coating
Applied once in the shop over corrected paint, then cured. It is not a driveway job.
Gloss
Wax or sealant
Warm shine that fades as the wax wears off.
Ceramic coating
Depth and clarity a wax cannot give, on black paint and white paint alike.
Washing
Wax or sealant
Normal washing, at the normal interval.
Ceramic coating
Water and dirt slide off, so the vehicle stays clean longer and washes in less time. It is not self-cleaning; it makes cleaning quick.
Rock chips
Wax or sealant
No protection.
Ceramic coating
No protection. Neither one stops a stone. That is what paint protection film is for.
Prep needed first
Wax or sealant
Decontamination. Clay and iron removal come before any wax, sealant or coating.
Ceramic coating
Decontamination and paint correction, so the coating locks in corrected paint rather than sealing swirls under it.
Cost
Wax or sealant
Low each time, repeated forever.
Ceramic coating
Higher once: from $1,650 for the Entry tier. Oka confirms it after he sees the vehicle.
Who it suits
Wax or sealant
Someone who enjoys doing it, or a vehicle being sold soon.
Ceramic coating
Someone keeping the vehicle, who would rather wash it less and have it look better while they do.
What Oka tells people
If you like spending a Saturday on the vehicle, wax is genuinely fine, and doing it properly beats a coating applied over dirty paint.
If the vehicle is one you are keeping, a coating is the better spend, because the cost is paid once and the correction underneath it is permanent. The reason a coating looks better is mostly the correction: the swirls come out first, and then the finish is locked in that way.
Neither one stops a rock chip. If chips are the worry, the answer is film on the front, and many owners do film on the front and a coating everywhere else.
Coating and wax questions
You can, but there is no reason to. It sits on top of the coating and wears off, and it dulls the way water behaves on the surface.
No. A coating is not self-cleaning; it makes cleaning quick. You wash less often and it takes less time.
No. A sealant lasts longer than wax and much less than a coating. Every detail package that covers the outside includes one; the coating is a separate service.
Yes, and every tier includes it: a single-stage polish on Entry, a two-stage correction on Signature and Elite. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so the swirls come out first.
Yes, and many owners do, because the factory paint is thin and easy to swirl. Correction first, then the coating.
